How to reduce impermanent loss
Reducing impermanent loss is mostly about limiting how far your two pooled assets drift apart in price, and earning enough fees to offset the drift that remains. You cannot remove it entirely, only manage it.
First, what impermanent loss is
Impermanent loss is the gap between holding two assets and pooling them, and it appears whenever their prices diverge. It only becomes permanent when you withdraw. Every technique below either limits the divergence or pays you enough to make up for it.
Seven ways to reduce it
- Choose correlated pairs. Two assets that move together (like ETH and an ETH liquid-staking token) diverge less, so impermanent loss stays small.
- Use stablecoin pairs. A pool of two stablecoins barely diverges, which is why stable pools show the least impermanent loss (though depeg risk still exists).
- Favor high-fee, high-volume pools. The swap fees you earn are what offset the loss. More volume and a higher fee tier mean more income against the same divergence.
- Manage your range. With concentrated liquidity, a tight range earns more fees but amplifies impermanent loss and can go out of range. A wider range is gentler but earns less.
- Avoid pairing right before big moves. Impermanent loss grows with volatility. Providing a volatile pair into a known catalyst is the worst time.
- Mind your time horizon. Because the loss is only realized on withdrawal, prices that return to where you started erase it. Forced exits at a bad moment lock it in.
- Automate rebalancing. Keeping a concentrated range in-range by hand is costly and error-prone. Automation on a low-fee chain like Base does the rebalancing for you.
What does not actually help
Chasing the highest advertised APR usually means the most volatile pair, which is the most impermanent loss. And a pool that promises to eliminate impermanent loss with no trade-off is a red flag, not a strategy. Use the impermanent loss calculator to see the numbers on your own pair before you deposit.
How Pool Party helps
Pool Party automates concentrated-liquidity management on Base, self-custodially, so ranges are rebalanced without you watching the chart, and cheap gas keeps the rebalancing from eating the fees. Launch the app.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you reduce impermanent loss?
- The most effective lever is pair choice: correlated or stablecoin pairs diverge less, so they suffer less impermanent loss. Beyond that, favor pools where swap fees are high enough to offset divergence, manage concentrated-liquidity ranges (or automate them), and avoid providing volatile pairs right before big moves.
- Can impermanent loss be avoided completely?
- Not entirely, unless the two assets never move apart in price. A stablecoin-to-stablecoin pool comes closest because the assets track each other. Any pool with a volatile asset will have some impermanent loss whenever prices diverge.
- Do trading fees cancel out impermanent loss?
- They can. Impermanent loss is only a real loss versus holding; the swap fees you earn while providing can offset or exceed it in a high-volume pool. Whether you come out ahead depends on how much the pair diverges versus how much fee income you collect.
