Self-custody means you alone hold the private keys to your crypto, so no exchange or third party can move or freeze your funds.
Often summarized as "not your keys, not your crypto". It removes counterparty risk, an exchange failure cannot touch self-custodied funds, but it makes you fully responsible for your seed phrase. Self-custody is required to interact with DeFi.
